Hello there and thanks for stopping by!
My name is Emily and I’m a self-taught watercolor artist and mom of twins.
If you think that becoming a self-taught artist while raising children is impossible, I’m here to tell you that it’s not!
In 2018, when my twins were just over a year old, I was tired of doing the same old boring routine during their nap times. Piles of laundry, a sink full of dishes, nor the prospect of doing a workout to lose the baby weight were filling my cup or satiating my need to feel like my own self again. I needed an outlet and activity that would inspire me and help me find a voice in the midst of motherhood overwhelm.
I remembered I had given watercolor a try over the years before having children, but with obligations such as work and nursing school, I didn’t stick with it. As I was clearing out my craft closet one day while the kids were napping, I came across my cheap palette of Artist Loft watercolor paints from Michael’s and thought about giving it another try.
Years later, after taking many classes from YouTube and Skillshare, I’m still painting. Since 2018, I have had a voracious appetite for learning about not just the watercolor medium, but about all things art. Since my children were thankfully good nappers, I had a few hours a day to learn about art fundamentals, drawing and painting. This passion for learning about art in my late 30s had ignited a creative spark that I hadn’t felt since my younger high school and college days.
I currently work as a nurse but I create art almost daily. And since my kids are no longer nappers, I paint mostly at night after they’ve gone to sleep. Painting is certainly a labor of love. My life would certainly be a lot easier if I just forfeited any urge to be creative and scroll on social media instead (which I still do!) But if you are a mom like me and you’re creative passions are calling you, I am living proof that you don’t have to sacrifice that part of you that makes your soul sing.
